A Farmstead In Wilmington
A NEW FARMSTEAD GARDEN outside of Wilmington, Delaware. I’ve had the privilege of helping to steward this property over the last seventeen years. Its newest garden is designed for family living and entertaining and stitches together the house and swimming pool with a framed lawn and mixed perennial borders. The garden incorporates a variety of regional materials; new flagstone walks, rustic stone stairs and brick masonry draw inspiration from the rich materiality of the historic farmhouse and outbuildings. An herb garden and mixed herbaceous borders feature modulating plant combinations that suit the garden’s particular microclimates. Intimate seating nooks and formal patios serve as balconies overlooking the farm’s rolling fields. A beautiful collection of mature tree specimens enlivens the garden and underscores the maturity of this landscape–cultivated continuously for more than three centuries.
