Clemson University | Bryan Mall

The Bryan Mall is one of Clemson’s most populous residential neighborhoods for first-year students. Originally built in 1971, its three high-rise towers float like Modernist boxes in an informal park without much accommodation for student gathering or a sense of precinct identity. The towers are to be renovated to meet the demands of tomorrow’s student body. A key part of the renovation will be to reorient the three towers to face a large common outdoor space or courtyard, which will serve as a precinct-level common space for informal gathering and student life events. New outdoor amenities include building-specific patios, a shared outdoor-living room for the entire neighborhood and a new network of accessible walkways, which will double over for service and move-in-move-out access. The landscape palette will incorporate campus standards while customizing special gathering spaces to build a sense of identity and a neighborhood-specific brand.
