Baltimore Modern
This Postmodern residence in Baltimore's Mount Washington neighborhood was designed in the early 80s by its architect owner. Its clean forms and iconic massing provide a striking contrast to the steep, curving forms of the terrain. The current owner engaged JCLA to reimagine the landscapes surrounding the house. The resulting design optimizes an underperforming space with strengthened indoor-outdoor connections, creating a series of garden rooms within a "plinth" zone surrounding the house before transitioning out to the sloping hillsides which are planted as permaculture orchards. A potager to the south of the house provides a place for growing vegetables, culinary herbs and perennials for cut flowers. A new stone terrace serves as an extension of a screened porch and hosts a gathering space around a fire pit bowl. A new potting shed and bespoke compost bins accent the architecture of the house with sugi ban siding and stained wood trim book-ends.
