Duke University | Nursing Quad

Duke University School of Nursing is situated on the edge of Duke Medicine. Although it is just a stone’s throw from the hospital entrance, the school provides students and faculty with a sheltered refuge in the midst of a bustling medical campus. A new landscape design for the school’s courtyard works around existing trees while expanding an outdoor bluestone terrace. New walkways provide accessible links to building entries and from the surrounding sidewalks. Well-crafted Duke-stone seatwalls, new bioretention gardens and shade-loving plantings combine to distill a stronger sense of place. In the winter, deciduous trees keep the space feeling light and sunny. In summer months, the courtyard offers a shady respite.
