Howard Community College | Campus Transformation
Unlike many community colleges, HCC strives to provide its students with a traditional campus experience. Jonathan guided the College through a landscape master plan effort, which yielded a blueprint for achieving this vision through landscape. Implementation projects include a new pedestrian mall, two new garden courtyards and an enhanced campus ring road—all in place of under-used parking lots. The latest phase of landscape construction took place with the construction of a new building for the College’s Sciences, Engineering and Technology programs (S.E.T.) and features teaching collections of native plant communities and geologic specimens. The collections are situated across the site based on microclimatic conditions, with plant community carefully calibrated to the actual soil conditions and solar exposure. Jonathan was the landscape architect for these projects, completing them while a principal at Ayers Saint Gross.
