Monmouth Farmstead

This master plan for a family farm in Monmouth County provides a framework for producing a diverse array of products for sale at local farmers markets. Understory plantings enrich an existing woodland creating a native food forest with nuts, pawpaws and native huckleberries. New beehives and associated meadows are paired with fruit and berry orchards for sustainable honey production. Beds of colorful herbecous plants ornament the landscapes around the farmhouse while also producing cut flowers, culinary herbs, fresh vegetables and winter greens/berries. Hedgerows and shrub borders are supplemented with berry-bearing native shrubs, wildflowers, birdhouses and bat-boxes to make them work as part of an integrated pest management strategy for the farm. The farm’s waterfront will also be managed for native wildlife and for local oyster production. Other landscapes are reserved for family life and entertaining including a new swimming pool and turf deck, fitness trails and a new boat dock for the family’s sailboat.
