Old Post Parade Ground
Fort Sill was created by the US military as a frontier outpost and played a central role in the forced settlement and subjugation of the Lower Plains tribes. Sited just south of the Medicine Creek on a low plateau that afforded good views of the surrounding countryside, the Old Post was laid out around a central parade ground which today serves as an important open space with both ceremonial and recreational uses for the surrounding residential and museum precinct. This landscape master plan provides a framework for balancing preservation (of archeological remains and extant features from the period of significance of the Old Post National Historic Landmark) and the functionality of the space as an active public amenity. The plan calls for preserving mature canopy trees–except where they conflict with historic structures or archeological sites. Selective investment shall be made in new canopy trees to ensure the longevity of existing shade belts, while steering the plant community toward a more resilient, drought tolerant mix.
