UMD-CP | Edward St. John Teaching & Learning Center

The Edward St. John Teaching and Learning Center at the University of Maryland, College Park supports collaborative, project-based learning both inside and outside the classroom. New campus landscapes surround the building and serve as informal, seasonal spaces for teaching and learning. Grade changes and plantings help buffer gathering spaces from heavy pedestrian traffic moving across the site, while consistency of materials and subtle shifts in planted character help integrate the new landscapes with the surrounding campus. Green roofs and several of the new campus landscapes are situated over building structures, which required careful calibration of the landscape design to the structural systems. Jonathan served as the landscape architect for this project, which was completed during his years of practicing at Ayers Saint Gross.
